Monomials
Adding: Add like terms by adding coefficients.
ex. 4ab + -2ab = 2ab
Subtracting: Subtract one monomial from another like
monomials, add the opposite of the second number.
ex. 4ab -- (-2ab) = 6ab
ex. 6x2 - x2 = 5x2
Multiply monomials:
1. Multiply the numerical coefficients.
2. When variable factors are powers with the same base,
multiply by adding exponent
ex. 2x2(5x3) = 10x5
Divide monomials:
1. Divide their numerical coefficients.
2. When variable factors are powers with the same base,
divide by subtracting exponents.
ex. 20x20 divided
by (5x3) = 4x17
Finding a Power of a Power:
Expand and multiply. ex. (6x3)2
= (6x3)(6x3) = 36x6
The Zero Exponent: x0
= 1 if x is a number such that x doesn't equal 0.
ex. (5x)0 = 1
The negative integral exponent:
x-n = 1/xn ex.
2-5=1/25
= 1/32
