WHAT IS IN A BELT I have had numerous students who have the misconception that rank and belts is what traditional martial arts training is all about. From very new students to intermediate and yes, students that have been with me over ten years. The very new ones just want that belt not understanding the philosophy of martial arts training. That is forgivable. The intermediate student who has been training and getting promoted quite steadily until they have to pre-test realizing that they will not receive a belt or a stripe, the student has the attitude "WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME", and then might quit, because they believe they are entitled to a promotion. Almost forgivable. Then there are the students who have reached Black Belt and should realize that the training is not to garner belts, patches or stripes but at that level it is development of the self. Unforgivable. .These students have wasted their time. I feel truly sorry for them. They have gone through the motions of training without focusing on the spiritual aspect of training. They are pursuing a piece of material, that will eventually tater and disintegrate. TANG SOO. Sa Bom Nim Alan Friedman |
